If you’re looking at oily grime on the pulleys, wet a rag with solvent (WD-40 or alcohol) and wipe them clean. If the grime is caked on, put newspaper on the floor beneath the drivetrain and then backpedal by hand while holding the tip of a small screwdriver against each pulley at an angle. The stuff will peel off. Do this to both sides of each pulley, then wipe them clean with a rag and solvent. Most modern pulleys have teeth. If they are worn to nubs or even broken, it’s time for new pulleys. But before you remove the old ones, call the bike shop to make sure they have the right replacements and won’t need to order them. In most cases you can keep riding on worn pulleys while waiting for the new ones. The shifting won’t be great but it will get you by.
