Zen and the Art of Lawn Mower Maintenance
Back when I was a young lad pushing an old two-stroke Lawn Boy around my parents’ yard, I swore that when I became a homeowner I would pay someone else to mow my yard. When I was mowing other people’s yards for money, I doubled down on this vow. When I became a homeowner and my dad gave me his relatively new two-stroke Lawn Boy, I broke the vow. What can I say? Yard work, when done on property one actually owns, is much more satisfying that yard work done in juvenile servitude.
For the past six years, I’ve spent at least a few hours each weekend, in season, mowing the yard and tackling other yard maintenance. As a dog owner, the maintenance is never ending. I love my dogs, but dogs are destructive. They create tracks around a yard in which grass will never grow. They kick stuff around when they take off after a squirrel. They cause general destruction when wrestling or doing other dog-type shit. There’s the actual shit.
I don’t plug in the iPod with the noise canceling headphones. I don’t mess with a riding mower and a frosty beverage. I push, I listen only to the sound of that two-stroke engine, I drink water, I breathe the polluted output that an engine that takes its oil mixed in with the gasoline produces. It gives me time to think and it gives me a sense of accomplishment that office work cannot provide. Though the grass and weeds immediately start growing again, when the yard is mowed and the driveway cleaned off, for a moment, the work is finished. Office work is always ongoing. Nothing is ever really finished. It’s Sisyphus in slacks.
Often I think of topics while mowing the yard. Often they vanish just as I untie the rope I use to hold the safety handle down. Or they never metamorphosize into anything longer than a brief observation. For example, it never ceases to amaze me when I see butterflies actively seek out piles of dog shit on which to land. I’m sure there’s a metaphor somewhere in that observation.
