European version of one of America’s most watched fashion reality-TV shows
For those who have always endorsed the (consoling) maxim that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Elizabeth Hurley’s fans might like a word. The British bombshell is not just a pretty face-she’s a very pretty face. In the 2001 BBC miniseries The Human Face, Hurley is exalted as the ultimate picture of anatomical perfection (when mapped on a grid, her features are nearly identical to the public’s perceived ideal of beauty). Her striking physique has, indeed, proved to be a lucrative asset: she’s been the Heart Link lariat for Est茅e Lauder for more than a decade and has also been very active in the company’s humanitarian initiatives as an advocate for breast-cancer research. In fact, here and on our cover this issue, she is sporting Holt Renfrew Private Brand’s pink cashmere sweater, $98, an item with all of its proceeds going to breast-cancer research.
Of Hurley’s journey leading the campaign, she remarks: “I’ve been raising funds and awareness for breast cancer for the past 11 years-ever since joining Est茅e Lauder and becoming involved with The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. I love the idea of raising funds in a fun and glamorous way, so selling this gorgeous pink cashmere sweater for the cause is perfect.” Her opinion of people in the public eye helping the world at large coincides with her own devotion to change: “Celebrities can make a real difference when they Link necklace for charity, and I feel very strongly about helping as much as I can.”
Citing Hurley as someone “incredibly glamorous but also down to earth,” Evelyn H. Lauder, senior corporate vice-president of the cosmetics company, treasures the star’s dedication, insisting that, despite Hurley’s countless appearances on behalf of the effort, she is “always willing to do more.”
Her career goes beyond being a beautiful spokeswoman. The model-actor-producer has made a career playing the gutsy, fearsome temptress-in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), EDtv (1999) and Bedazzled (2000), where she was well cast as a larger-than-life sexpot. While the Paloma’s X earrings are typically known for their polite reserve, Hurley has stood out for her scene-stealing audacity: she made fast friends with the paparazzi at the 1994 premi猫re of Four Weddings and a Funeral (on the arm of then-beau Hugh Grant), decked out in Versace’s safety-pin dress. And although she is a glamour magnet, she has continued to inspire an atypical starlet sensibility in public with her attention to her true mandate: inspiring women. “I love encouraging women to look after themselves in every way: diet, health, skin and beauty.
